Leading the Future of Computing Education

Our Department's Journey

For more than 25 years, computing courses have been provided for students from various departments by the computer centre. With the recent developments and trends in the information technology (IT), the University of Cape Coast established an academic department known as the Department of Computer Science and Information Technology.

The primary focus of this department is teaching and research in computing. Furthermore the need for trained computer scientists and information technologists is one of the challenges that face the rapidly growing Ghanaian economy.

Addressing Human Resource Challenges

The worldwide shortage of qualified human resources in IT has been the main obstacle to the deployment, exploitation and development of ICT to accelerate socio-economic development. In Ghana, there is an urgent need to meet this shortfall in computer science with graduates having the requisite skills.

Our programs are geared toward this major area of manpower requirement by preparing qualified SSS graduates for careers in IT. In this regard, the department admits qualified SSS graduates and trains them for successful careers in computing.

Academic Programs

The Department offers three primary programs: BSc Computer Science, BSc Information Technology and a PhD in Computer Science and Application. These programs provide a comprehensive education in both theoretical and practical aspects of Computer Science (CS) and Information Technology (IT).

Our curriculum includes a variety of exciting courses, including software engineering, artificial intelligence, internet systems and technology, computer security, algorithms, data structures, programming languages, operating systems, hardware development, databases, and network design. We also cover business management and practices, as well as specialized areas such as cryptography, data mining, and optimization at the doctoral level.

Research and Innovation

Research is a cornerstone of our department's activities. Our faculty members and students engage in diverse research areas including artificial intelligence, machine learning, data science, cybersecurity, software engineering, and human-computer interaction.

We actively collaborate with industry partners and other academic institutions, both locally and internationally, to address real-world challenges through innovative computing solutions. These collaborations also provide opportunities for our students to gain exposure to current industry practices and trends.

We recognize the importance of student organizations like CITSA in enhancing the educational experience through peer learning, networking, and extracurricular activities. The department fully supports CITSA's initiatives and encourages all students to actively participate in its programs.
